Red Light Massage Therapy:

**Can be covered under Massage Therapy Benefits. **

Red Light Therapy, also called Low-LEvel Laser Therapy (LLLT) or Photobiomodulation (PBM)  is a safe and non-invasive therapy technique that works by delivering concentrated wavelengths of natural red and near-infrared light into the skin all the way to the cells of the body.

The research shows that the primary effect of light and/or laser is increased tissue regeneration, balancing of subtle energies, and increased reflexes. It affects the body at all levels, cellular, circulatory and systemic. The increased cell function creates increased cell proliferation, cell division, cell maturation, secretion of growth factors, wound healing, collagen production, wound strength, wound closer, myofibroblasts, chondrocytes, epithelization, skin circulation, oxygen supply and activity satellite cell cultures (stem cells). It regenerates and improves in almost ALL  tissue types.

Red Light Therapy can be billed under Massage Therapy, as long as there is a pre-assessment Massage Therapy Treatment prior.

Avoid Tattoos if possible - Dark tattoos absorb light, so this can damage them

Flame-ups:

Light Therapy can give an increased Parasympathetic Nervous System response, such as slowed heart rate, upset stomach (promotes digestion which increases salivation, increased gastrointestinal motility and increased blood flow to the digestive organs), enhance immune response, increased relaxation and calmness, improved cognitive function and increased emotional regulation.

These are all desired states of health but sometimes this can be too much of a change too quickly. Therefore shorter treatment times may be necessary depending on your situation.

How much Treatment is enough?

Look for at least 3 of the following reactions:
Less tenderness or pain
Less muscle tension
Decreased trigger point size
Decreased edema and redness
Enhanced functional recovery

For Acute Phase………. 2 - 3 Treatments or more per week

For Chronic Phase………. 1 - 2 Treatments per week

Total number of treatments can vary from:

Acute = 2 - 6 or more

Chronic = 2 - 20 or more

Side effects of Treatment?
Across the board of multiple clinical studies researching the effectiveness and the usefulness of Red Light Therapy is that it is safe, non-invasive, and well-tolerated.

There are few small side effects that have been observed including temporary redness and tightness of skin (contrary to a sunburn, this has no adverse health effects, as there are no harmful UV Lights present), or slight harmless eye strain (as one might have under lights of any kind).
